This is my first letter to the editor, written about the Ontario bicycle helmet law in 1993.
A penny for a thought. Well, this one is worth $90, the same amount as the fine for not wearing a bicycle helmet when the law comes into effect on October 1, 1995.
I agree that children should wear bicycle helmets, but should we be forcing everyone to wear them? I don't think the Old Order Mennonites who ride bikes will wear helmets because it's against their religion to use modern conveniences.
I don't think there will be much enforcement in our small town. In fact, will the police enforce it all? Many people don't use hand signals and the police have a lot of other things to do such as stopping drunk driviers and getting rid of drugs on city streets.
There are probably just as many bicycle accidents as there are boat accidents. Maybe people should wear helmets on boats, ic case the boat hits something and they go flying and hit something themselves.
If people speak out, there could be a second vote on this law, as there was when Canadian senators tried to give themselves a $6,000 raise in expenses.
